@evan we need to communicate more about alternatives as well. #Pleroma for example might not have the same feature set but it's otherwise very compatible to Mastodon and eats less than 10% of the resources. #Misskey is very feature rich, eats more resources than Pleroma but is still easier on the server than mastodon.

Guess what?

On Mastodon, your follower/follows ratio doesn't matter. No one cares about your #clout. You don't need to build a #brand.

If you follow a bunch of people it shows that you are curious and want to hear ideas from diverse sources. Go crazy with the #follows and the #boosts. The more the better.

But feel free to #unfollow if things get overwhelming. And use #Lists to put your follows into more manageable cohorts to see what a limited group of people are posting.

Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.

A History of Recent Twitter Migration to the Fediverse

1 month ago: Mastodon? No thanks. You have to have a Ph.D in Hackerology to use it.

3 weeks ago: I don't like this Mastodon... But if I have to... *sigh*

2 weeks ago: Wait. This does really cool things like let me edit posts. So genius. Is this free?

1 week ago: OMG! There's other apps! Now I know why there's a Fediverse!

Today: Comrades—let's fight for our freedom! Cast off the chains of Big Social!

A quick search led me to this @Hamishcampbell hamishcampbell.com, who seems pretty well-informed and implicated on current affairs of the and and the and and the like. Very interesting person.

I'm quite curious what his insight would be about your question, so I hereby take the freedom to put him in the loop.

(If it's the wrong Hamish Campbell, well, uh... that would make two of them!)

Superbe, l'affiche de Julie Doucet pour le Festival d'Angoulême !

@zoesqwilliams
69 pence ~= 1$ CAD/year, this sounds like a reasonable estimate to cover for hosting costs (VPS) and a domain for a relatively small instance of 100-200 users (prices may vary).

Make it 69p/month, and you got just enough budget to cover for the labour needed to properly maintain the instance and react faster to scale up when there is a sudden surge of users (wages may vary, here too).

#introduction I came on here in order to be a new and better person to the one I was on Twitter, more open and respectful, less preening and rude. Lol, no, I came on mastodon bc I was doing a feature for the Guardian on mastodon, but in the course of it I realised I could stand to be less preening and rude. Hi everyone. I'm nice now.

I've been thinking about the Fediverse for a looooong time, since before it was called the Fediverse. I'll admit my thinking hasn't evolved much for much of that time. The basic structure of it has been clear for nearly 15 years.

But today (so far - it's only 8:30 AM here!) I've learned *three* new perspectives that have changed/improved the way I think about the Fediverse/Mastodon in subtle but important ways.

So. Much. Gratitude. 🙏❤️

Please join me in sharing a big “thank you” on behalf of us newer #Mastodon users to all the folks at @Mastodon including @Gargron and the team, as well as the Instance admins and existing user base, and everyone else in the #fediverse. You all created an amazing, innovative platform that is finally getting the recognition it deserves and provides a better alternative to legacy #socialmedia platforms that are currently imploding. My sincere thanks!

Evan Prodromou, who helped inspire & create the #ActivityPub protocol that makes @Mastodon run, called this recent #Twittermigration a “tipping point”.

“I have not been this excited about federated social networks since we published ActivityPub. The shift has started. … We’re doing this. Don’t be on the wrong side of history.” @evan
